The Perfect Recipe

Robin Sewell’s presentation, “Beating XBOX at Its Own Game” showcased a selection of interactive games, Power Pak Pro, designed by FTC Publishing.   The game templates are designed to integrate with Microsoft Power Point. The teacher can choose one of twenty-four game templates to create an interactive game that will support her curriculum.  Game styles include Jeopardy, Monday Night Football (very cool), Pyramid, and many others.  This was a very informative and fun presentation, and all disciplines could benefit from and enjoy this program.  We not only listened, but actively participated in several games, becoming a very animated and verbal audience.

I was so impressed with this program, I asked our technology department to purchase Power Pak Pro K-12.  I used the Jeopardy game when reviewing my 6th grade science class for an exam, and the students really enjoyed it.  The only drawback is that it takes time to create a bank of questions and put them into game format.  A possible solution to this would be to let students create the questions and insert them in the template.  This alone could act as a review, it would help develop critical thinking skills since questions have to increase in difficulty as points increase, and it would involve the students technologically. This is a perfect recipe for success.
